Avascular necrosis is a condition in which the bone of the humeral head dies due to lack of blood supply. This can be caused by severe fracture or even chronic steroid use.
Bursitis is the inflammation of the pad-like cushion between bones and the overlying soft tissues. One of the largest of these fluid-filled pads is in the hip; other important protective ‘bursae’ pads are located on the knee, elbow, shoulder and heel. They help reduce friction between the gliding muscles and the bone, and when inflamed, movement in the affected part of the body becomes very painful.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is pain and numbness caused by increased pressure on a median nerve that travels from the forearm to your hand through a tunnel in your wrist. It affects up to 10 percent of the population, especially women.
Osteoarthritis can affect any joint in the body, anywhere two or more bones come together. It is known as the ‘wear and tear’ arthritis because the covering on the ends of the bones gradually wears away and becomes rough, like sandpaper, making it painful to move the joint.
Osteogenesis imperfecta means bones that are improperly formed, and which break easily. Although it is rare, people with OI have a genetic mutation that keeps them from being able to form strong bones.
Osteoporosis means “porous bone”, and it affects 28 million Americans, causing an estimated 1.5 million bone fractures per year. It’s a disease of progressive bone loss which develops unnoticed over time – until a fracture occurs.
Rheumatoid arthritis affects multiple joints on both sides of the body at the same time, and is a systemic disease in which the body’s immune system literally turns against itself. Instead of protecting the joints, the body produces substances that attack and inflame the joints.
Soft Tissue Injuries - These are the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body – literally the “soft” tissues – which can be injured by everyday activities, sports, or overuse. Common soft tissue injuries are strains , contusions (or bruising}, chronic tendon pain or tendonitis , and bursitis , which is inflammation of a cushion-like sac located between a bone and tendon, or bone and muscle.
