James P. McDonald, M.D.

After attending medical school at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, James P. McDonald, MD, completed his internship and residency at Case Western Reserve University, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Cleveland, Ohio. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. McDonald has a special interest in joint replacement, arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery and fracture care. Dr. McDonald was attracted to orthopedic medicine because it offered the ability get patients feeling better quickly. He also appreciates the ongoing technological advancements that can dramatically increase joint function.

In addition serving as the current medical director for The Orthopedic & Spine Center of Lake Norman, Dr. McDonald was the first orthopedic surgeon to perform the state-of-the-art MAKOplasty® procedure in the region. He and his associate, David C. Hillsgrove, MD, both offer MAKOplasty® for partial knee replacement through Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville. Lake Norman Regional is one of only five hospitals with this technology in North Carolina.  

When performing the MAKOplasty® procedure, Dr. McDonald utilizes the RIO®, developed by MAKO Surgical Corp., which features a tactile robotic arm and a 3-D virtual patient specific visualization system for a new level of precision.

“My wife, Deborah, is a native of Mooresville, and I have always loved the Lake Norman area. I have enjoyed living and working here for the past seven years and raising three wonderful daughters,” Dr. McDonald says. He is active in Davidson United Methodist Church and recently participated in a mission trip to Costa Rica. He is currently on the board of directors for the Lowes YMCA and provides volunteer orthopedic care for the Healthreach Community Clinic in Mooresville. Dr. McDonald also provides field coverage for area football and lacrosse games.

When he isn’t working, Dr. McDonald enjoys lake sports and tennis and spending time with his family.

Dr. McDonald is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the North Carolina Medical Society.
